Spring Flowering Shrubs
Azalea
Rhododendron
Zones vary with species. A spring flowering shrub available in a wide range of color. Some newer varieties are re-bloomers. They grow well among the trees since they require less sun than most plants.
Banana Shrub
Michelia figo
Slow growing evergreen shrub about 6 to 8 feet but can reach up to 15 feet. Fragrant spring flowers resemble the magnolia flower with powerful fruity fragrance like ripe bananas. Suitable for Lower and Coastal South.
Duetzia
Deutzia gracilis
A short dense deciduous shrub growing to about 2'-4' tall and wide. Tiny bell shaped flowers cover the shrub for a short period of about 2 weeks. The best flowering will occur in full sun. Suitable for the Upper, Middle, and Lower South.
Japanese kerria
Kerria japonica
The Japanese Yellow Rose is a deciduous shrub with a mature height of 3 to 5 feet. They bloom in early spring before the leaves emerge and may rebloom during the summer season. The bright green stems add interest through out the fall and into spring.
