Gardening in the Southern USA

More time is spent gardening in the Southern regions than almost any other region of the United States. A good portion of the southern areas garden almost year round.

Gardening here isn't always easy. There's plenty of hard soil to go around and the insects seem to thrive despite all efforts to thwart their existence. Summers may be hot and humid but often lack sufficient rainfall causing severe drought conditions.

Southern gardeners don't try to make flashy fashion statements in the garden they go with what will work. Occasionally throwing in something new.

The Upper South, Middle South, Lower South, Coastal South, and Tropical South make up the 5 climate zones as defined in "The Southern Living Garden Book".

The map to the right shows approximately the area covered by the Southern Region.

Altitude and micro climates will affect the actual compatibility of plants listed for your particular area.

There are many more beautiful and worthwhile selections than I have posted. These are just a sampling of suggestions for each category.

Many of my selections will fit easily into more than one category but I have chosen to only list them in one. There is no rhyme or reason to which category I chose.

Please enjoy your browsing and maybe you'll be inspired to try some of these in your own gardens. Top
