SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER AND LEAST SANDPIPER

Calidris pusilla and Calidris minutilla

The two pictures of Semipalmated and Least Sandpipers that follow were taken at a small farm pond on township road 460 (DeLorme Gazetteer, Pg. 70, D2) in Washington County on 4 August 2000. They were taken with a digital camera set to 3x held up to one side of my binoculars (10x) which were propped against a fence post. Thus, the photos are about what one would see through a 30x scope. They are not quite as clear as my shots through my spotting scope since the binoculars were not firmly fixed on a tripod. Nevertheless, the two photos provide a good contrast between the size and coloration of Semipamated and Least Sandpipers (at least in the fall).
