Canoeing across a peaceful lake,
Awaiting warmth from a brightening sky,
I had no feeling of being observed,
Though an eagle had me in his eye.
I ventured a bit too close for calm,
He stirred and soared away.
His flight inspired a sense of awe
And I wondered why he didn't stay.
The human beast, harmless or not,
Has a way of becoming offended.
All that's needed is a hint or whiff
Of being someone rejected.
The eagle followed a natural law,
Yet I took it personally,
Because he didn't get acquainted
Before deciding to flee.
Don't judge a book by its cover
Yet we are judged by our mean.
I wonder if I'll ever be regarded
As an individual human being?
