Powder Coating

Powder coating is a metal finish that is approximately 10 times tougher than paint.

It is applied by an electrostatic process. Putting a negative charge on the part while having a positive charge on the powder particles, the powder is drawn to the part much like dust is to your TV screen.  The part to be coated is first prepped and cleaned, then hung with the negative charge put on it. Shot with the powder and then cured in a curing oven.

There are several different types of powder depending on the application it is intended for, which in turn means there are different ways to apply the powder and the different powder cures at different temps and times with many variables involved here. Powder coating has come a long way from the days of the handful of standard colors, there are metal flakes, translucent's / candies, textures, high temp, etc.

Powder coating makes one of the best base coats for paint because of the very good adhesion it has to the metal surface. A good rule of thumb here is you can paint on powder coat but you cannot powder coat on paint.

Each have their advantages over the other, paint lends itself better for graphic's and designs, while powder coating is tougher and should not chip or peel like paint can. Each of them, paint and powder coating have a place for us in our world of motorcycles.
