Oil Change

Here's how I do it

#1     Go buy the oil of your choice 5 qrts. and a small funnel .    (I like synthetic. but Dino oil is ok too)

#2     You need a oil filter, there's a list of filters that fit.

#3     You also need a shallow drain pan large enough to hold only 3 qrts at a time.( not  a big one good reason for that)

#4      Need 17mm box end wrench

#5      Need 17mm socket, ratchet & extension

#6      Need a rubber strap wrench to remove the filter, (I use one that take's lids off jars got it at the grocery store.)

#7      A pair latex rubber gloves

#8      Remove the seat set aside the oil filler neck is on the forward right side take the cap off.

#9      You really need a bike jack for safety reasons, some do it with something stacked under the kickstand to level the bike that is just asking for trouble.
(Trust me Do it right the first time.)  Because the bike can tilt to the right and fall over and do more damage to you and the
bike that the jack cost, unless you tie the bike in such a way that it can't tilt.

#10    Jack the bike up high enough to get the front drain plug off and the drain pan under it when you put  the wrench on the plug I tap it hard with my hand to loosen it  (remember left to loose ,right to tight) then just unscrew it and let it fall in the pan you can get it later.  Let drain completely I tilt the bike towards the drain hole a little so I make sure I get as much out as possible.   next lay a rag under the plug hole and move pan under the oil filter and unscrew it and put in pan.

Clean off the filter flange and wipe a little new oil on the oil filter gasket and reinstall as tight as you can with your hand then just snug it up with the wrench.
Then get drain plug wipe it off put it back in and tighten snug
(Don't over tighten it you will regret it). Then discard the old oil in a safe manner.

#11  Now you need to drain the oil tank   (17mm socket rachet, short extention) it's under the transfer case area next to the frame ( look at picture) drop drain plug in the pan same as front get it later.  You will probably need to hold the drain pan while it drains.  Once that's done wipe the drain plug off and put it back same as front.  Discard old oil and clean all your mess up before you go any farther.

#12  Now put 2 1/2 qrts of oil in the tank use small funnel (Read this twice put the oil cap back on snug ) the reason for this if you start it with cap off all the oil will blow straight up and out real mess.

#13   Start the engine for 10 seconds kill it.  Remove oil filler cap and top off the oil level so that it is just under the top hash mark or at the half way mark eather of which is fine, unless it newer bike and everybody likes it half full because of valve guide issues. I can't verify that.

#14  Start bike a let it run a bit then stop it and check all the bolts and filter for leaks.

#15 On the later models we have learned it is best to use 4 qrts oil, so as not to possibly contribute to the sticky valve issues.
