Puppet History

Finger Puppets

These finger puppets were designed and knitted for my daughter and son in 1977  when I  was relatively new to the art of toy making and knitting.

I've included pictures of each finger puppet and please forgive the fact that they are a little battered and worn now but they did make it through the years of washing and rough little hands playing with them.

I've written the directions to make the puppets as they are shown in the photo for each individual puppet. I think that when my grandchildren are old enough, I will make new   puppets and probably make changes, as I have gotten much better at knitting and embroidery. If I do make significant changes or make a puppet that is not shown here, I will make sure that I post the results.

I wanted to make the puppets large enough to add details to it but small enough for little
hands. All accessories are either embroidered or crocheted onto the puppet or sewn on so it cannot be removed. If you do not crochet, I am sure that you can knit the accessories and then sew it onto the puppet. US Knitting worsted [4 ply] is used throughout with a small needle #3 [US] to make the puppet firm and not floppy. I also thought that the embroidery would hold up better with the yarn instead of embroidery floss through multiple washings and not too gentle little hands.

There is no gauge for these puppets...they can be made larger or smaller by increasing or decreasing the needle size...each puppet is approximately 3-1/2" tall by 2-3/4"  wide [measuring from hand to hand.]

If you make any changes or make a puppet that is different than the ones shown, please share with me and I will post it as an addition to these puppets. You may send pattern changes and photos to: k2p2k2@gmail.com

I hope that you enjoy making these finger puppets as much as I did when I first made them.
