Our Objective

What is our objective?

The veterinarian DSLD/ESPA pages are for an in-depth look at recognizing symptoms and diagnosing DSLD/ESPA in the Equine community.

Becoming familiar with all symptoms will help diagnose DSLD/ESPA, especially in vague early cases. A horse may show many or only a few symptoms. Often DSLD/ESPA horses are misdiagnosed as having WNV, EPM, or neurological problems.

Individual cases presented on this site will include online video of symptoms, ultrasounds, diagnostic vet report, necropsy, how to harvest tissue for tissue diagnosis and tissue diagnosis results.

News

Dr Jaroslava Halper, Md. PhD, at UGA has recently given the option of  tissue diagnosis  Tissue samples from horses that were not ultrasounded may be submitted to Dr Halper at UGA.  This is another way to confirm cases at necropsy.

Dr Gus Cothran, formerly of U of KY, will be continuing his genetic work at TX A&M.

Documenting diagnosed cases Owners of DSLD/ESPA horses are encouraged to enter their horse into our database for documentation and tracking of diagnosed DSLD/ESPA horses.

Veterinarians:  please inform owners of DSLD/ESPA horses that a support group (DSLD-Equine) is available at Yahoo Groups.
